Good nutrition can prevent chronic disease

March is recognized as National Nutrition Month. Now is a good time for the health department to remind us that what we eat translates into how we feel today, tomorrow and into the future. In the Unites States, 69 percent of the adults and 32 percent of the children are overweight or obese. This extra weight is related to more than 30 illnesses, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. These are preventable chronic diseases!
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells us that if we all practice just four low-risk behaviors, we have a 63-percent less chance of dying from malignant cancer, major heart disease and other causes. What are these magic behaviors?
• Don’t smoke
• Eat healthy
• Get more exercise
• Drink alcohol in moderation
