East County families learn to make healthy cooking choices

A recently released report from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows about 30 percent of children in California ages 10 to 17 are obese or overweight.

Child obesity rates are significantly higher in Bay Point and Pittsburg - typical for lower-income communities where fast-food restaurants are appealing, Menefee said. Family lifestyle also can play a role in food choices. Unlike some lower-income communities, Bay Point and Pittsburg have a healthy number of produce options.
