Activate Upstate a path to better health

Activate Upstate began on Monday and it's 52 weeks that are sorely needed for many South Carolinians. Consider: 28 percent of South Carolina adults are obese (with a body mass index of 30 or higher), according to the Trust for America's Health About two-thirds of South Carolinians are overweight (with a body mass index of 25 or higher). Obesity and excessive weight have been conclusively linked to chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, strokes and diabetes. Activate Upstate is the new year-long follow-up to the annual but shorter Greater Greenville Shrinkdown, which has helped thousands of Upstate residents get fit over the past three years.
